So, I hate how Barry’s has become my point of comparison for every single class that has a treadmill and floor section. But I guess that’s a testament to how well Barry’s delivers in that format - best in class. Ok, now imagine that Barry’s has a cousin, in the form of a posh, mid-century modern summer camp…. That’s what CAMP feels like. From the makeshift tent as a front desk, to the chevron doors, to even the bathroom tile, shower fixtures and towel hangers; this place oozes style, and a taste that perfectly captures the so-cal cool, “we chill in Joshua Tree on the weekends” vibe.
But WAIT, there’s more! While I can only rate and comment on the circuit class I took, there’s also yoga, sculpt aka sweaty hot yoga, weights and cardio equipment. If this sounds like everything you’ve ever wanted, this might be your forever gym.
The class itself was a standard HIIT circuit, with a fair amount of switching between the floor and treadmill. The one thing to note is that these treadmills are human-powered and U-shaped, so if you’ve never run on one of those, it takes some getting used to. Also, since it isn’t the standard treadmill, don’t expect the standard, “ok set your machine to x speed” experience. Format is more like, “run 200 meters” or “jog for 2 mins, then sprint for 15 seconds.” Floor routines are pretty standard HIIT with dumbbells, medicine ball, TRX moves, all on a turf floor.
The shower was great, clean and modern. It’s one of those, “I wish my shower was this nice” moments that you rarely find at a gym shower.
All in all, CAMP’s circuit workout is fantastic, and if you’re a fan of the Barry’s type workout but want to try something that feels a bit more socal and a little less Hollywood, then you should definitely check it out.
